About the library

    Three Gorges University library was built in April, 2002 and completed in September, 2003. The library has more than 7000 m² of floor space and 42605 m² of total floorage. With desirable appearance and reasonable design, it has excellent ventilation and light. It is a modern library with advanced facilities and a good reading environment. In terms of services, it endeavors to realize the idea of “readers the first, people foremost”. In order  to  facilitate the readers, the library practices free access system so that the readers could get what they want by themselves to read and loan. Its hours of service are about 14.5 hours a day without vacation.

    The library is made from 6 branches including resources insurance dept, circulation dept, technology dept, reference dept, reading management dept and library office. It has the staff of 87 persons including 1 research librarian and more than 20 associate research librarians. It attaches importance to library training so as to renew librarians’ knowledge including English, computer and professional knowledge. With their ability improving in the annual library training, the librarians are able to serve the readers in nearly all respects. At the same time, the library has achieved rapid development in recent years, because of annual budget increasing year-by-year. The library collection amounts to nearly 2 million volumes with the addition of the library databases of about 60 series including fulltext and abstract databases in Chinese and English. The library services cover inter-library loan, document transferring, online database retrieval, reference service, selective dissemination of information(SDI), foreign language translating, novelty search service, library instruction and others. Its inter-library loan and document transferring services link with Wuhan University and Central China University of Science and Technology so as to share their resources. All these library collections, databases and featured services give efficient support to the university’s task of teaching and scientific research.

    The library emphasizes its automation and networking system. Now there is an advanced and fairly complete information infrastructure in the library. Its total information storage capability is 8 terabyte (TB) with 427 panel-points. The readers can access some Chinese and English books and electronic databases through the campus computer network. The librarians can work on acquisitioning, cataloging and circulating management by means of the network. An increasing number of electronic resources and virtual resources are available to the readers in the library and online. All these form an information system in all-direction, opening-type, multi-level, efficient and service-centered. And also the system supports the university’s goal of becoming a comprehensive provincial university of A-class in China.
